Chargers Wrap Up Busy Day With Wild 10-Inning Victory

BREWTON, Ala.

A wild, extra-inning win capped a busy day for the Carl Sandburg College softball team Wednesday as the Chargers continued their Spring Break trip to the Gulf Coast.

Sandburg dropped a pair of contests to Highland (Kan.), the 14th-ranked team in the nation, by scores of 12-5 and 9-3 before pulling out a 10-7 victory in 10 innings over Coastal Alabama-East.

Key Moments

  • After Highland scored four runs in the top of the first, the Chargers cut the lead in half with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning. Katie Droste (Biggsville, Ill./West Central) led off with a single and scored on a passed ball, and Lauryn Campbell (Galesburg, Ill./Galesburg) doubled to right to knock in a run.
  • Sandburg got within 7-4 in the sixth when Droste drew a bases-loaded walk, but the Scotties blew the game open with a five-run seventh.

Sandburg Standout
Campbell doubled twice in four at-bats, scored a run and had an RBI.

Key Moments

  • The Chargers jumped to an early 2-0 lead when Emily Bloomer (Burlington, Iowa/Burlington) doubled with two away and Campbell smacked a two-run home run to left, but Highland tied it in the bottom half with a pair of RBI groundouts.
  • Sandburg evened the score at 3-3 in the third when Marie Marshall (LaFayette, Ill./Galva) singled to center, driving in Bloomer from third.
  • Highland took the lead for good with a four-run fifth as the Scotties did all their scoring in the frame with two outs.

Sandburg Standout
Bloomer finished 3 for 4 at the plate with a double and two runs scored.

Key Moments

  • The teams traded blows in extra innings, with each scoring two in the eighth and one in the ninth. The Chargers (2-6) finally broke through for good in the 10th, scoring three runs. Erin Flairty (Pekin, Ill./Pekin) delivered a two-run single to right to put Sandburg up 9-7, and she scored on Bloomer’s groundout to short.
  • The Warhawks brought the tying run to the plate with two outs in the bottom of the 10th, but Madison Benge (Stronghurst, Ill./West Central) struck out the next batter to finish off a complete-game victory.
  • Campbell knocked a three-run homer to left in the first to stake Sandburg to an early 3-0 lead.
  • Trailing 4-3 in the fourth, Flairty evened the score with a base hit to right to plate Stevenson. The game remained scoreless from that point until the eighth.

Sandburg Standout
Flairty finished 3 for 6 with a run and three RBIs. She came through with both the game-tying hit in the fourth and the game-winning hit in 10th.
